Mentoring

Training and orienting a new official is perhaps the most important task an experienced official can undertake.  Not every official has a patient approachable personality and can foster an environment where questions are encouraged.

On field experience, in addition to rulebook discussions and mechanics, is what new officials need.  They shouldn’t have to fend for themselves. But often are thrown to the wolves in game situations that are above what they can handle.

Get them game experience by mentors stepping down to take lower level games.  You’ll see quicker results in the rookie’s performance.  This includes good pre and post game conferences, going over plays, calls and interpretations.  Show tact.

Officials aren’t beating down the door to become mentors.  But you may find that you rediscover your love of officiating and improve your game by diving into rulebooks and mechanics manuals to open your eyes to something you’ve forgotten or overlooked.

Mentoring helps everyone, not just the new official.
